We asked our Creative Collaborators to develop a bedroom exhibit that answer this question. Spend a Night (or more) at the Museum to become immersed in their stories, and create your own.
Oliver and Thembani

Oliver: ‘There was a time when I was very sick - so sick that I thought I was going to die. During that period, my wife left me. But there is a God in heaven who sees everything. My friends also ran away from me; not one of them stood by my side. Still, I continued to pray to God. I would climb the mountains and pray, asking for His mercy, until the Lord of Heaven answered me.’
Thembani: ‘Life was very difficult. I had been sick for many years and could hardly eat. My husband left me and took everything from our home, even the plates. I became even more ill, stressed, and my blood pressure was high. But I kept praying to God for comfort.’
So begins the story of Thembani and Oliver, as told by Zimbabwean street artist Oliver Matamba. His exhibit explores the power of finding the right love to keep your mind settled.

The Weight of Small Things: Reworlding Domestic Space in Johannesburg,

Through painting, fibre, and sculpture, this exhibition examines the home as a site of care, labour, spirituality, and political survival in Johannesburg. Domestic gestures—stitching, carving, tending—are framed as acts of endurance and transformation. Featuring original works by Boemo Diale, Tinyiko Makwakwa, and Simon Moshapo Jnr.

A three-part installation exploring Ndabeni’s maternal lineage. Family trees, kitchen cupboards filled with healing plants, and bathroom texts combining scripture, tarot, and song lyrics trace how women and ancestors ground identity and survival.
Home Economics

A hybrid installation and photographic studio inspired by the 1950s ‘township lounge’ portraits by photographer Ronald Ngilima. Through upcycled garments, domestic tools, and staged interiors, the work reframes domestic labour, clothing, and femininity as sites of dignity, resistance, and cultural authorship. Visitors are invited to stage and photograph themselves, carrying “home” on the body.
