The Mava Field School, takes its name from the Xhosa word “Mava,” which means “experience” or “experiences.” The school is dedicated to preserving and passing on indigenous knowledge—especially traditional craft skills through participant research and creative conservation.

August 2025

The knowledge documented by the Venda participant-researchers was shared with a group of 16 predominantly artists and designers, who drew from this and the collection of Venda 'craft' at the Ditsong museum to inspire their own creative projects.

November 2025

An exciting cross-disciplinary creative jam that brought together students, independent creators, and individuals from fields like design, storytelling, architecture, cultural heritage, and technology. Over the course of three days, they collaborated to create innovative, playful projects that explored the intersections of culture, storytelling, and interactive media.

A queer-led gathering responding to a shared longing for connection, belonging and meaning beyond commercialised or exclusionary spaces.

Inspired by the Pride 2025 picnic and the legacies of queer elders and activists who understood community as a spiritual practice, uMhlangano seeks to co-create spaces that honour spiritual expression outside of formal religion through shared reflection, music, conversation and open offerings. while remaining rooted in care, psychological safety and mutual respect.

Make and Mend is a hands-on fibre workshop focused on repair, transformation, and collective making. Participants bring a torn or worn textile that holds meaning and gives it new life by turning it into yarn to crochet into something new. No prior crochet experience is needed.

A collective block-printing experience that transforms the hidden stories of our heritage into a shared, living tapestry.
